The Vineyard Gazette reports that the U.S. Coast Guard was called to assist 2 commercial fishing vessels that had become trapped in sea ice this weekend [Feb. 28-Mar.1] in the waters off the Elizabeth Islands.

On Friday, Feb. 27, the 69’ Misty Blue became trapped in ice north of Quick’s Hole passage. Coast Guard Station Woods Hole launched a 49’ stern-loading buoy vessel, which broke the Misty Blue out of the ice at about 11:30 a.m. and escorted her back to sea.

On Saturday afternoon, around 3:00 p.m., the fishing boat Capt. RM Chase became trapped in ice inside Woods Hole passage while returning to New Bedford. An aids-to-navigation team that was breaking ice nearby assisted in freeing the vessel.
