April 7, 2014
The Coast Guard rescued 3 people from the water after their 36’ cabin cruiser caught fire near Shinnecock, New York, on Sunday, April 6.
A Good Samaritan contacted the communications center at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound reporting a vessel on fire near Shinnecock Inlet. A crew from Coast Guard Station Shinnecock and the South Hampton Bay Constables responded.
The fire quickly engulfed the 36’ cabin cruiser, forcing the crew to abandon the vessel and swim to a life raft. Within minutes of the notification, Station Shinnecock crew arrived on scene. They removed the 3 persons from the life raft and transported them to the Oakland Marina for medical attention.
The North Sea Fire Department engaged in fighting the blaze until the boat sank. The vessel was not deemed a hazard to navigation.
Of the 3 people who entered the water, only 2 had lifejackets. It’s unclear if they were wearing them at the time of the incident or grabbed them prior to entering the water.
