The Gloucester Times reports that a surf fisherman claims to have witnessed a shark attack on a group of seals at the mouth of the Merrimack River in Newburyport, MA.

Jose Matias was fishing for striped bass on Wednesday, Sept. 31, when he said he spotted two fins near some seals that were bobbing on the surface about 20 yards or so off Plum Island Point. Matias then says he saw the shark jump out of the water in pursuit of a seal. Matias estimated the shark at about 12’ long.

New England Aquarium spokesman Tony Lacasse was quoted as saying that the spotting of a shark in the mouth of the Merrimack River isn’t improbable.
