SouthCoastToday reports that Massachusetts charter boat captains and anglers are voicing their opposition to a New England Fishery Management Council proposal to close 3 areas off New England to recreational groundfishing.

The closed areas would be used for research, and would include 55 square miles of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

The council is accepting public comment on the proposal until Jan. 8, 2015. After the comment period ends, the council will review the feedback, finalize its plan and send it to the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Secretary of Commerce.
