Block Island Officials Concerned with Shellfish Sanctuary

Oyster Fishing Returns to Wareham, MA

Officials on Block Island recently voiced concerns about a shellfish sanctuary on the island, according to an article on BlockIslandTimes.com

This issue of the stewardship of the Cormorant Cove spawner sanctuary came up at a recent Town Council meeting.

Councilor Chris Warfel, who is proprietor of Sun Farm Oysters, LLC and whose oysters are harvested in the Great Salt Pond, said that the sanctuary is a “good project,” but the problem is that since “there is no program to maintain it at the federal level,” there is a question concerning stewardship of the spawner sanctuary. Warfel noted that he had learned that the sanctuary was “owned by nobody,” and “if the town wanted to own it, they would have to apply for a lease.”
