Block Island Times: Block Island Race Week, spry and ever-youthful, doesn’t look 50. The race began in 1964 and was patterned after the British Cowes Week. Throughout its long history, this has always been the largest regatta in the U.S. Storm Trysail’s Block Island Race Week, which occurs every two years, so though this is the 50th year, it’s not the 50th race.

John Fisher participated in race week for the first time in 1971. He was a teenager then and over the years participated a handful of other times. However, since 1999 he has spent most of his time on shore working out the logistics of the races.
