Block Island’s Payne’s Dock Expansion Approved
August 4, 2011
Block Island Times: Less than 6 months after the Coastal Resources Management Council unanimously rejected an appeal by Champlin’s Marina to expand its dock several acres into the Great Salt Pond, it unanimously approved a smaller 0.38-acre expansion by Payne’s Dock on June 28.
The decision, based on an application originally submitted in 2005, but on hold for years as the Champlin’s hearing process played out, will allow Payne’s dock to expand 80’ north into the pond, then build a 187’ dock east to west that would form the top of a broad “T” shape. It is currently 2.8 acres in size, which means the expansion will increase the marina’s size by approximately 14 percent.
