Coast Guard officials have noted a large increase in boat groundings on Lake Champlain in 2016, due largely to low water levels.

As of Tuesday, Aug. 30, the Coast Guard had responded to a total of 19 groundings on the lake this summer, up from just 8 in 2015.

A lack of snowfall, coupled with the abnormally dry summer, has led to a lower-than-normal water level on the lake. Officials say the lake’s height is more than 16 inches below last year’s level.
