Boaters Warned of Belugas in Narragansett Bay

This past weekend (May 10) brought reports of several sightings of beluga whales in Narragansett Bay. The whales were seen breaching off Jamestown and swimming in parts of the West Passage. Belugas are commonly found in cold waters, such as in the Arctic and rarely are seen south of Canada.

*Mariners should be aware that approaches within 100’ of
these protected whales is prohibited and that all sightings should be reported
to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management,
Marine Fisheries Section at (401) 423-1923.
