Breaking the Ice

New England Boating friend and unofficial Maine correspondent Capt. Ed Rice of River Run Tours was on scene when the Coast Guard began spring ice-breaking operations on the Kennebec River last week.

Rice sent us these great photos of cutters working in tandem to break ice near the Richmond Bridge and South Gardiner. He reports that the vessels had a hard time in some spots, as the ice was 12 to 16 inches thick. The photos were taken on March 14 and 15.

Many thanks to Capt. Rice, who runs fun, educational sightseeing tours and picnic cruises of the Kennebec and Sheepscot Rivers.
