Budget Cuts May Affect Providence WaterFire Events
April 24, 2013
Boston.com reports that Providence’s public art display, WaterFire, may be in jeopardy due to automatic federal budget cuts.
The problem has to do with the ongoing practice of maintaining water levels on the Providence River—which needs dredging—by closing the hurricane barrier at certain times. The Army Corps has informed WaterFire officials that it may no longer have the budget to fund this frequent usage of the barrier. If the river level is too low, WaterFire boats will not be able to tend the numerous braziers along the river.
