Building a Light-Tackle Wind-On Leader System
July 13, 2017
A wind-on leader is very helpful when it comes to casting lures and baits, as you can reel the leader inside the rod guides before making a cast. This also helps when landing a fish, plus you don’t have to worry about a swivel hanging up in the tiptop guide and possibly damaging the rod.
My preferred wind-on system involves 2 basic knots. First, tie a spider hitch in the end of the braided main line, then use a Bristol knot (also called a no-name knot) to connect the braid and fluorocarbon or mono leader. The connection is very strong and relatively easy to tie. It’s also low-profile, so it passes easily through the rod guides.
