Business is Growing for Maine Kelp Farming Co.

Portland Press Herald reports on a Maine company— Portland-based Ocean Approved—that is growing kelp for commercial sale.

The company’s kelp farm is located off Little Chebeague Island. The Herald reports that Ocean Approved has received a total of $470,000 in grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Maine Technology Institute, and is focused on selling the product nationally through wholesalers to restaurants, schools and institutions. Sales have increased 400% in the past 2 years.
