Camden-Based Schooner Olad Celebrates 90th Birthday

The Camden-based schooner Olad turns 90 years old this year. The 48’ wooden vessel spent last winter in Rockland, undergoing a series of repairs and refinishing.

Designed by Horace Manley Sr., the Olad was built over the winter of 1927, and launched by the Crosby Yacht Yard in Osterville, MA. Its first owner, Alexander Smith, sailed her between Massachusetts and New York for several years before being forced to sell her after the Great Depression.

Later, the Olad ran as a charter boat in the Caribbean, where it became a favorite vessel of Walter Cronkite.
