Cape Cod Bay, the Canal, Buzzards Bay: 6.6.12

Jeff Miller of Canal Bait & Tackle in Sagamore, Massachusetts, recently posted this report for the Cape Cod Canal, Cape Cod Bay and Buzzards Bay.

The Cape Cod Canal has been crazy these past few days. Tons of fish were caught, but the biggest we weighed in at the shop was the 45.7-pound bass caught by Ryan Collins on a pencil popper. However, the biggest surprise of the week was that all of my fishing buddies and I were crushing the fish on Shimano Waxwings, which has an amazing action. Also of note, Jacob Madden (son of New England Boating friend Steve Madden) took his first keeper in the Canal this week—a 38.5-pounder! That’s one heck of a first keeper, Jacob. Congrats!

Meanwhile, Cape Cod Bay is filled with big stripers from the Fingers to the Parking Lot. Use a tube-and-worm setup with leadcore line and you are guaranteed to hook up with some really nice fish. The honey mustard and black Santini Tubes have been the most effective.

Buzzards Bay is still loaded with sea bass, and fluke have just begun to show up on Middle Ground in Vineyard Sound. Use Spro bucktail jigs, preferably white or chartreuse for the sea bass and striped bass. Fluke will also hit the Spros. Winter flounder are being taken in the West End of the Canal to Buzzards Bay. Use a Zing seaworm rig to catch them.

Bluefin Tuna have just started to show up around Stellwagen Bank They size of the fish is kind of a mixed bag. All the Sebile Stick Shadds have been very productive. Use the bigger 5-ounce sizes to cover more water
