Cape Cod Times: The beach club and road may be gone, but the 1-mile strip of sand that separates Popponesset Bay [MA] from Nantucket Sound still has an important role to play in limiting the ravages of ocean storms.

That’s why Save Popponesset Bay, a nonprofit organization, is teaming up with the town of Mashpee and the Massachusetts Audubon Society to find a way to rebuild and maintain the Popponesset Spit. The organization recently won a $194,188 grant from the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management to evaluate the spit and do design and permitting work on beach nourishment and dune restoration. Save Popponesset Bay owns most of the barrier beach and natural wildlife preserve, and Mass Audubon owns the spit’s tip.
