CG Calls Off Search for Missing Fisherman
November 1, 2010
The Coast Guard has called off its search for a crewmember of a commercial fishing vessel who fell overboard 46 miles southeast of Gloucester early Saturday morning.
“It was reported that he was a poor swimmer or can’t swim,” Lieutenant Garrett Meyer was quoted as saying on Boston.com. Other crewmembers said they threw a life ring at the man, but he missed it.
Crewmembers on board the Miss Lyndsey II eventually lost sight of the man, who was not wearing a life vest.
The crewman, a single man in his early 40s, apparently fell overboard while working on the nets.
The Coast Guard Cutter Vigorous searched throughout the night, while an HU25 Falcon jet searched Sunday morning. The entire search eventually involved 4 boats, 2 helicopters and the jet, and covered more that 800 square miles.
