CG Responds to Flooding Vessel off Nantucket
June 22, 2011
Coast Guard rescue crews responded to a disabled fishing vessel 70 miles southeast of Nantucket on Monday, June 20. The 76-foot fishing vessel “United States” contacted Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstanders after their vessel became disabled and started flooding from a 1” hole 6” below the vessel’s waterline.
Watchstanders received a distress call from the vessel’s captain at approximately 5:00 p.m. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue crew from Air Station Cape Cod immediately launched to deliver de-watering equipment to reduce the flooding.
The flooding stabilized with the use of the delivered pumps. Watchstanders put the vessel on a communications schedule to ensure flooding was under control and crewmembers were safe. The vessel was escorted to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where it was safely moored as of approximately 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 21.
