Chatham, MA, to Continue Beach Patrols

Cape Cod Online: This summer, 800 or more people a day will again frolic on the sand of Lighthouse Beach and swim under the watchful eyes of the town’s beach patrol.
Chatham selectmen voted 3-2 Tuesday night to keep the beach patrol — featuring all-terrain vehicles onshore and a jet ski and boat offshore — after 2 years with no drownings and a year with no rescues at the beach.
“Out of a $32 million budget, we’re arguing over $85,000 that provides an enormous amount of protection and insurance to people who visit here,” Selectman Timothy Roper said before the vote.
