Chunking Tip: Heads Up!

Head chunks can be key to bagging bunkers like this Boston bass. Photos by Tom Richardson.

When chunking for striped bass, nothing beats a head bait. One theory behind this is that striped bass instinctively home in on the head—and specifically the eyes—of a baitfish, as that’s the part they have to swallow first. Bluefish, on the other hand, are content to devour just about any section they can sink their teeth into. Save your tails for the choppers.

By the way, when fishing head baits, hide the hook by burying it in the meat. Just make sure it doesn’t cause the bait to spin as it drifts back with the current.

Heads win, hands down.
