Classic Cape Cod Yacht Lost at Sea
July 9, 2013
A 70-foot mahogany schooner built on Cape Cod in 1928 has apparently been lost at sea with seven people on board.
According to an article in the New York Times, the Nina was lost at sea while traveling from New Zealand to the west coast of Australia. The last communication with the vessel was reported on June 4, when it was caught in a storm and its sails had been shredded. Rescuers called off the search for the yacht last week.
The Nina was a five-time Vineyard Race winner and, according to the article, also was a winner of the Newport-to-Bermuda Race, the Fastnet Race, and a race from New York to Spain in 1928.
