Coast Guard Assists With Sea Turtle Rescue Off Montauk

Members of Coast Guard Station Montauk assisted the Riverhead Foundation in freeing an entangled Leatherback turtle approximately one mile west of Montauk Point, N.Y., Sunday.

Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center watchstanders received a report Sunday evening, stating that a sea turtle was entangled in a net near Montauk Point, N.Y.

A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Montauk transported members of the Riverhead Foundation to the location of the entangled Leatherback and assessed the situation.

The Riverhead foundation members, with the assistance of the rescue boatcrew, safely freed the Leatherback turtle and witnessed it swim away.
