Coast Guard Investigates Drifting Windsurf Kite
March 22, 2011
The Coast Guard suspended search efforts after crews scoured waters where a “windsurfing kite” was found near Maine’s Lamoine Beach on Friday, March 18. It is unclear whether the “kite” in question was a windsurfing sail or a kite used in kiteboarding.
The search began when Coast Guard Station Southwest Harbor received a call reporting that a windsurfing kite had been spotted adrift near Lamoine Beach at approximately 12:00 p.m.
A Coast Guard 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Southwest Harbor was launched to investigate and found the kite adrift in the channel. A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew also aided in the search.
Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol crews searched the waters for 4 hours without results. The Coast Guard then decided to suspend further search efforts.
Coast Guard watchstanders are requesting that anyone who may have any information regarding the windsurfing kite to please contact Coast Guard Sector Northern New England at (207-741-4465).
