Coast Guard Searches for Missing Lobsterman
December 13, 2010
The Coast Guard has reported that its crews are searching for 38-year-old David Mahonen after he fell overboard approximately 45 miles south of Rockland, Maine, on Sunday, Dec. 12.
The Coast Guard received notification from the 77-foot lobster boat “Timothy Michael” at about 12:20 p.m. that a crewman had gone missing, and dispatched a Jayhawk helicopter and Falcon jet from Air Station Cape Cod and the Coast Guard Cutter “Harriet Lane” a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter designed for all-weather rescue. The “Harriet Lane” was diverted from its patrol and is expected to arrive on scene around 10:00 p.m.
As of Sunday evening, the search crews were battling 10- to 15-foot seas and winds in excess of 45 knots that are anticipated to deteriorate throughout the evening. Fog and rain continue to hinder Coast Guard search efforts.
The fishing vessel “Timothy Michael” is based in Rhode Island and frequents Jeffreys Ledge, Maine, when engaged in fishing.
