CT’s Ponus Yacht Club Turns 100

Greenwich Time: “Big Al” leans on one of the tables of the dining area just across from the bar where a row of middle-aged men, all dressed casually, sit and sip mid-afternoon brews.

“You don’t have to be on Wall Street to be a member,” he said, as the blue-collar patrons, all male, enjoyed a rest from their labors at Stamford’s Ponus Yacht Club.

Those familiar with the club, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, would say “Big Al,” or as the ex-Marine is sometimes known outside the club, Al Wignot, really hit the nail on the head in describing what so endears the club to its members.
