Cutting-Edge RIBs Built in Rhode Island
January 27, 2011
The Naiad 7.9 is an amazing new rigid inflatable boat (RIB) designed by Naiad Inflatables of Newport, Rhode Island, and built in cooperation with New England Boatworks in nearby Portsmouth. The 26-foot boat features a hand-welded aluminum hull and framework and hybrid tubes.
While the name Naiad has its roots in Greek mythology, the present-day namesake has its roots in New Zealand. For over 25 years, Naiad has been at the cutting edge of RIB design and construction, which has led to the creation of some innovative boats for operating in harsh conditions.
Naiad was the first RIB manufacturer to build boats with metal hulls and a removable foam fender system. Over time, the company’s range of boats grew to cover everything from patrol and rescue boats to pilot boats to yacht tenders. The latest design is custom made for the Coast Guard in nearby Portsmouth.
The Naiad 7.9 is a formidable compliment to the new 154-foot USCG Fast Response Cutter (FRC). The 7.9 rides piggyback on the FRC, ready to be ramp-launched at a moment’s notice. Powered by a 480-hp waterjet and loaded with sophisticated electronics, the Naiad 7.9 is not only keeping local families safe from job loss, it is also protecting our nation’s interests worldwide.
