Avid boater and fisherman Kevin Carter of Westport, Massachusetts, emailed to let us know that his friend Ray Bosse had discovered this dead dolphin on February 25 while conducting a walking survey of the southwest shore of Gooseberry Neck, in lower Buzzards Bay.

Bosse is a volunteer at The Lloyd Center in nearby South Dartmouth and a participant in the Tufts University SeaNet program, in which volunteers monitor specified sections of shoreline and report on their findings. The Gooseberry and the Cherry and Webb section of Horseneck Beach are Bosse’s SeaNet “beat”. He has surveyed the beach regularly for 7 years, and found the dolphin on the southwest side of Gooseberry.

The dolphin’s body was in very good condition, Bosse reported. “It seemed to be fresh, since there was blood weeping from a small cut near its eye,” he said.

Bosse has alerted officials and will let us know what he learns in the coming weeks.
