Using what looks to be a battery of GoPro cameras, anthropologists Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel have created a new documentary film shot aboard a scalloper off the New England coast.

Leviathan shows a “day in the life” of a New Bedford scallop-trawler crew by attaching the cameras to every conceivable part of the boat’s fishing gear. The filmmakers capture shots of the nets being hauled back and the bycatch of starfish, bottom fish and myriad other marine creatures. They also show the crew at work, shucking scallops and hauling back the trawl. It’s a deck-level look at the hard life of a modern fishing crew.
