Drunken Boater Buzzes Boats, Crashes in Haverhill, MA

On the evening of Saturday, Aug. 1, a boater later determined to be under the influence of alcohol was witnessed driving erratically, weaving dangerous close to other boats and sometimes circling them at high speed on the Merrimack River between Newbury and Haverhill.
The incident took place between the Rocks Village Bridge and the Groveland Bridge. The boater, who was identified as Demetrius Solomon, 40, of Rowley, eventually crashed into a wooden fender beneath the Groveland Bridge, where his boat became stuck. Solomon was quickly detained by the harbormaster and brought to shore, where police were waiting.
According to the police, Solomon smelled of alcohol. After failing a field sobriety test, he was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and unsafe operation of a motor vessel.
