Epic Stand-Up Paddleboarding Adventure
March 2, 2011
EastBayRI.com: On March 1, two Little Compton, Rhode Island, men pushed off into the ocean from Key West, Florida, and—standing up the whole way—intend to paddle their custom-made 17’ 6” paddleboards on a voyage that will take them well over 2,000 miles up the eastern seaboard. Destination: Portland, Maine.
From their home base on Willow Avenue in Little Compton they’ve been preparing for nearly a year. They have a name for their project, called “SUP the Coast,” SUP being the acronym for stand-up paddling.
“I’ve always had this desire to do something huge, a massive trip, and when I was in Hawaii last summer, I thought, why not just do the East Coast,” said Mike Simpson, 41, one of the two men.
