Event of the Week: Salem, MA, Antique & Classic Boat Festival
August 19, 2014
Looking for a good reason to visit Salem this weekend? The 32nd Annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival will be held August 23 and 24, 2014, in Salem, Massachusetts. The gathering of mostly wood, mostly private boats will be on display to the public at Brewer Hawthorne Cove Marina.
A hallmark of the Festival is the great variety of craft exhibited. “Where else,” says event coordinator Pat Wells, “can one see early to mid-20th Century motoryachts, mahogany speedboats, sloops, yawls, schooners and a 19th Century gold-leaf canoe? Although many of these craft are museum-quality, they are real boats and still used by their owners.”
Indeed, many owners invite the public aboard for a personal tour, regaling their visitors with tales of their boat’s history and memorable voyages.
A crafts fair, old-time band music, children’s activities, the Blessing of the Fleet and boat parade round out the festival.
