Extreme High Tides Predicted This Week

Boaters who still have skiffs, kayaks and canoes along the shore, or boats made fast to pilings, may want to take precautions this week, as unusually high tides are predicted across the region starting today (October 27) and running through Sunday. Localized flooding is also expected to take place.

The super-high tides are a result of the sun, moon and earth aligning. In Buzzards Bay and Narragansett Bay, for example, tides are expected to be 1 to 1.7 feet above normal levels over the next 4 days.

Boaters in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Stamford, Connecticut, should note that the hurricane barriers protecting those harbors may close during the upper stages of the tides over the next 2 days. Monitor the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Twitter and Facebook posts for notices. Stamford boaters can also call (203-348-8955).
