Film Documents Importance of Menhaden
December 7, 2017
Menhaden is the second largest fishery in the U.S. Two states (VA and NJ) currently control more than 96% of the coastwide quota, while perspectives among state fishery managers remain varied.
With the fate of continued menhaden recovery uncertain, Red Vault Productions and The Nature Conservancy set out to capture 5 knowledgeable New York stakeholders’ perspectives on why abundant menhaden is good for New York’s ecology and economy. The resulting documentary, titled Foraging on the High Seas, is not only beautifully shot, it does a great job of explaining how menhaden play a key role in the environment, as well as the livelihood of humans who depend on these small but important fish.
