The New York Times reports on a new shark tournament to be held in Montauk in which no sharks will be killed. The tourney, called Shark’s Eye, is the result of efforts by Montauk artist April Gornik and Concerned Citizens of Montauk, who worry about the world’s declining shark populations.

All of the sharks caught in the tourney, held August 27-28 out of the Montauk Marine Basin, will be photographed and released where they are caught. Fishermen will be asked to use circle hooks, and to attach tracking tags to select sharks before letting the fish go. The winner, determined based on a point system, will receive an original painting and $6,000. Over $10,000 in cash prizes will be handed out.
