Gloucester, MA, Sees Rise in Cruise Ship Traffic

USA Today reports that Gloucester, Massachusetts, is the new hot stop for cruise ships.
As many as 30 cruise vessels are expected to visit the historic fishing port this year, says the article, starting with a call by Holland America’s 1,258-passenger Maasdam. That’s up from fewer than a dozen ships last year and just 2 in 2009.
The increase comes 4 years after the opening of a privately funded marine terminal along the Gloucester waterfront, and local leaders have worked hard in recent years to convince cruise lines to give Gloucester a try.
The allure of the town, they say: It’s an authentic place.
