The New England Fishery Management Council is considering changes to harvesting regulations to “explicitly account for herring’s role in the ecosystem,” according to a recent article by the Associated Press.

The hearings on the harvest of the small fish, which supports one of the largest fisheries on the East Coast, will begin May 22 in Narragansett, Rhode Island. They will also take place in Rockport, Maine; Portland, Maine; Gloucester, Massachusetts; Chatham, Massachusetts; and Philadelphia.
