Helmsman Missing off Cape Cod

Coast Guard crews are searching for a person in the water after receiving a report of 17-foot boat driving in circles with no one on board near Popponesset Island, Massachusetts, on June 21.

The Coast Guard received notification from a Good Samaritan around 12:35 p.m.

The Coast Guard has also issued a broadcast to mariners, asking boaters in the area who see anything that could help in the search to contact the Coast Guard.

A Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod was nearby and responded first, verifying the report.

The 21-year-old man reportedly left from a marina in Waquoit Bay to take the boat to Popponesset Island around 8:30 a.m. It takes approximately an hour to make the journey.

A 41-foot and 25-foot boat crew from Station Woods Hole, a Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod, a Coast Guard Auxiliary flight crew, a Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection crew, the local harbormaster, and the Mashpee fire and police departments are searching for the missing helmsman.

The Coast Guard has also issued a broadcast to mariners, asking boaters in the area who see anything that could help in the search to contact the Coast Guard.

TowBoatUS Falmouth towed the Boston Whaler to Popponesset Bay.

Currently on scene there are 2-foot seas and 10-knot winds.
