Hobie Redesigns Adventure Island, Tandem Island Sailing Kayaks

Share

Hobie has announced a total redesign of its Hobie Mirage Adventure Island and larger Hobie Mirage Tandem Island sailing-kayak systems. Both boats incorporate a combination of new Hobie technology, a redesigned hull and a focus on optimum sailing performance.

Hobie’s MirageDrive hands-free pedal propulsion system now offers Glide Technology, which incorporates special roller bearings to reduce friction. This allows the user to maintain the same speed with less effort, making it easy to propel the boat in strong currents or get home when the wind dies. The Adventure Island is fitted out with a single MirageDrive, steerage and sail-handling control, while the Tandem Island comes with 2 of each.

New technology and years of development have gone into the new Vantage CT seats.  They feature 3-level height adjustment, and recline to the preferred angle. Meanwhile, BOA technology lumbar support provides maximum comfort with the turn of a dial. The quick-drying seats can also be removed and used as beach chairs.

As a major part of the redesign, the hulls of the Adventure Island and Tandem Island have been deepened and the cockpits moved farther aft. Also, the bows of both boats now feature a reverse angle. These three elements combine with the elevated Vantage CT seats to provide a drier ride.

Also new are stiffer 2-piece, carbon-composite masts that minimize weight and maximize performance. The larger masts and sail area ensure smoother, faster rides. Roller-furling systems and vertical battens provide better lift, while retractable centerboards have replaced the daggerboards to reduce lateral slip. The larger amas (side pontoons) offer better stability, and tuck in against the rotomolded polyethylene hull for ease of docking and/or trailering.

Built-in rod holders and the Lowrance-Ready Built-in Transducer Mounts appeal to the growing number of anglers who have found that both vessels serve as exceptional fishing platforms. Multiple hatches, on-deck stowage and the Vantage CT seating encourage multi-day adventures for sailors and anglers alike.
