Human Leg Found on Nantucket Beach
September 27, 2010
The remains of a male human leg, with sock and boot attached, were found on Thursday, Sept. 23, on a Nantucket beach by rangers with the Trustees of the Reservations, who then summoned local police officers. The leg was discovered on the beach at Coatue, on the northern shore of Nantucket.
Speculation immediately began as to whether the leg belonged to Jonathan Hemingway, who presumably drowned after falling overboard in late March while returning to Nantucket from Hyannis with his wife and 2 small children in a 23-foot boat. Elizabeth Hemingway was apparently sleeping in the cabin of the couple’s Maritime Patriot while her husband steered toward the island. She awoke at 3:30 a.m. when the boat ran aground on Cliff Beach. The engine was still running and Jonathan was not onboard.
