Jigging Machines Help Maine Fishermen Target Pollock
July 29, 2016
The Portland Press Herald reports that some of Maine’s commercial groundfishermen are using automatic jigging machines to avoid codfish while increasing their catch of pollock.
The “automatic jigging machines” are being loaned to handful of other fishermen by The Nature Conservancy. They allow them to more accurately target those parts of the water column where pollock feed, while also avoiding the bycatch of cod. Those cod that are accidentally caught by the jigs can often be released alive.
