Life Raft Prototype “Brews” Drinking Water
December 30, 2010
The SeaKettle is a prototype life raft featuring a built-in solar desalination system that generates a continual supply of fresh water for its occupants.
The raft’s ingenious desalination system involves pumping seawater into a Gortex-covered reservoir, where the water is subject to evaporation from the sun. When the evaporated water hits the canopy, it condenses and drains into 4 pockets around the raft, filling them with fresh water. The system is said to produce enough water to keep up to 5 people sufficiently hydrated. Drawbacks include the need for sunlight and heat for the evaporation process to work.
