Live from the 2012 South Shore In-Water Boat Show

I should be mowing the lawn (really, ask my wife), but duty called, so I hightailed it to Hingham for the South Shore In-Water Boat Show, being held through Sunday at the Hingham Shipyard Marinas.

I am writing this while sitting on a bench in front of the docks, having just made a quick tour. The sunny weather seems to have had a positive affect on attendance, as there are lots of people checking out the wide variety of boats, all of them power models.

Plenty of families too, and the kids are having a blast climbing on the boats or expending some energy in the mandatory bounce house (gotta have a bounce house). There’s food too, of course, from sausages to cupcakes, and beer (gotta have beer).

But back to the boats…there are models from Parker, Sea Ray, Whaler, Grady, Pioneer, Monterey, Eastern, Sabre, Back Cove, Vanquish and more. Fishing boats, sport boats, lobster boats and cruising boats are all on display, from 20′ to 40′ plus.

Drawing lots of curious stares is the futuristic 23′ Smart Boat, which gets phenomenal fuel economy and was designed by a high-tech sailboat designer.

Local dealers Russo Marine, Bayside, 3A and others have representatives on-hand to walk attendees through the boats and answer questions. Sea Tow is here, too, demonstrating their automated radio check system, signing up new members and providing loaner lifejackets for the kids.

All in all, it’s a fun time, and there’s more in store for tomorrow, as the weather promises to be even better.

You won’t find me walking the docks, however. I have lawn duty.
