MA to Regulate Harvesting of Sand Eels

The Massachusetts Dept. of Marine Fisheries has announced that is will now regulate commercial harvest of sand lance (sand eels), an important food source for many marine fish, mammals and birds.

The new 200-pound trip limit for commercial fishermen is designed to prevent the proliferation of an industrial scale bait or reduction fishery.

This limit will continue to accommodate small-scale commercial or personal bait harvesting activity that may be occurring with beach seines or other similar artisanal gear.
