Maine Bill Would Facilitate Flare Disposal

A bill in the hands of the Maine Legislature would dictate where commercial and recreational boaters could dispose of their expired marine flares, according to the Mount Desert Islander. Currently, there is no program for flare disposal, which can lead to dangerous and unapproved disposal methods or storage of expired flares.

LD 252 would allow boaters to dispose of their expired flares at various fire stations around the state, throughout the year. The bill also states that marine flares would be collected during boating events, such as boat shows.

Once collected, flares are to be incinerated by the fire departments.
