Maine Coastal Navigation Course

The Coast Guard Auxiliary of Maine will hold an introduction to navigation of the Maine coast beginning March 21 at the Maine Maritime Museum in Portland.
Using a chart of the Boothbay area, Auxiliary members will teach students how to read a chart and become familiar with the coastal waters between Small Point and Pemaquid. Problem sets will help boaters plan cruises of the area. Skills learned can be applied to all U.S. nautical charts and GPS chart plotter displays.
Topics include true and magnetic headings, variation, lines of position, chart symbols, piloting, latitude and longitude, dead reckoning and aids to navigation.
Course materials include the Three Rivers chart (13293) and handout on navigation principles. Students must bring a parallel ruler and dividers, which may be purchased in the Maine Maritime Museum store.
Course Information:
- The class will be held on Monday evenings beginning on March 21 through April 11, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
