Maine Elver Season Postponed
March 23, 2020
Maine’s Department of Marine Resources has decided to close Maine’s coastal waters to “fishing for or taking elvers (juvenile eels)” for a minimum of two weeks in order to limit exposure by fishermen and eel wholesalers to the coronavirus. Harvesters are forbidden to set any gear (usually fyke nets) during the closure.
DMR Commissioner Pat Keliher said, “It has become clear that the typical crowded conditions both on the rivers and in the (elver dealers’) shops could not only allow transmission, but also speed the spread of the disease throughout the state as fishermen traveled along the coast to harvest and sell elvers, and then return to their homes.”
