Maine Lobster Boats Hunt For Ghost Traps

Thanks to some generous lobstermen, Maine’s Casco Bay is getting a spring cleaning. A fleet of 10 lobsterboats are spending two days hauling lost gear from the bottom of Casco Bay, according to a story in the Portland Press Hereald.

The cleanup is being directed by the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation and funded with a $200,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Lobstermen are happy to participate because the lost gear gets in their way when they set their traps, and hinders draggers as they scour the ocean floor. The lobstermen who participate receive stipends to cover their fuel costs. But it isn’t a money-making proposition.
