Boston.com reports that commercial lobstermen off Maine’s Mid-Coast region are trying to collect lost lobster traps, buoys and other lost gear. The traps, many lost in storms or due to entanglement, are often referred to as “ghost traps”, as some continue to collect marine animals as they sit on the bottom.

As a partial solution, the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation hosted a 2-day gear-recovery effort Monday and Tuesday [March 19-20] in the waters off Harpswell, where fishermen volunteered their time and boats to try and recover the lost gear using grappling hooks and bring it ashore to be disposed of and recycled.
