Maine Museum to Raffle Sailing Duckboat
February 20, 2014
The Maine Maritime Museum’s 2014 raffle boat is a beautiful 12’ Barnegat Bay duckboat. Tickets for the raffle are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20 and are available in the Museum Store or online on the museum’s website. Proceeds go toward Boatshop programming.
The design of the duckboat has changed little over the last 150 years. With an overall length of 12′ 3″, a beam of 4 1/2′ and freeboard of about 1’, the duckboat employs to great advantage the “skimming dish” concept, which evolved into the modern e-scow.
The raffle boat, built in the museum’s boatshop in spring 2013, is aptly named Merrymeeting for the famed duck-hunting bay on the Kennebec River just north of the museum. Constructed of cedar planking over oak with a mahogany transom and spruce spars, the boat is dressed with a gaff-rigged sail and adorned with bronze hardware.
