Maine Teen Honored for 1972 Rescue

Alvin Beal of Jonesport, Maine, will be posthumously awarded the Coast Guard Certificate of Valor in Jonesport, on Friday, March 8, 2013. Senator Susan Collins will join Rear Admiral Daniel Abel, commander, 1st Coast Guard District, to present the prestigious award.

Beal is being recognized for saving his father’s life following a boating accident off Great Wass Island in October 1972. Beal perished during the rescue. His body was found by divers in the vicinity of the accident following a 5-day search. He was 17 years old.
